Cozy Dorm Room.

During my 2nd year at Singapore Polytechnic, we were assigned an introductions to 3D art class; during which we received several assignments. This would prove the final one: a 3D model depicting the cutout of a room. The room’s overall design and contents were left up to the student, with the only limitation being that it had to be a bedroom.

Having gone a couple of late 90’s anime movies with a few friends at the time (notably Patlabor 1 and 2), I decided to go forward with the concept of a room set in the late 90’s, early 2000s; perhaps by a student.

Tufts University, circa 2000 AD at the Rainbow House — an LGBTQ-friendly coed dorm.

I don’t remember which model it was in particular, but the textures and design for the computer came from an old IBM micro computer.

Alongside the time period, setting and location, I also wanted a bit of behind the scenes story telling. A student studying computer science perhaps, with a love for japanese media and the wits tinker with a few spare electronics. Being a student myself helped with the setup and arrangement of clutter as well, I hate to say it but I still have a few of those Amazon boxes. Once the items to be made were written down (server box, PC, stacks of paper etc), it was then moving onto modeling and texturing.

In certain cases I lacked the normal data for textures; nowadays I’d use a heightmap, although at the time being inexperienced I used Photoshop’s 3D tools to generate them instead. I also did a simple cloth simulation for the blanket, since I never did learn the habit of keeping my bed in the morning. Several of the textures were reused as well in order to fit everything into two 2k texture atlases.

As a finishing touch, once it was uploaded to Sketchfab, bloom; just for that slight dreamy look.
